Huge congratulations to the Highschool U17 Hurling Team who won the coveted Fitzgerald Cup (County U17A) for only the second time in their history. They defeated Nenagh CBS by a single point in a nail biting final with a final score of Highschool 1-17 Nenagh CBS 2-13. Following on from a huge performance in the semi final where they defeated a much vaunted Thurles CBS side, they were made fight to the very last puck of the ball to beat Nenagh. The team was backboned by 6 St Marys Players in Nathan Wynne in goal, Donal O' Callaghan corner back, Enda Condon centre back and joint captain, Dylan Condon midfield, Ben Fuller wing forward and precise free taker and Dara Beckett wing forward. Also on the panel were Cian Mahedaviah, Billy Cooney and Daniel Tobin. Indeed the defining play of the game was manufactured and finished by two of these players as Dylan Condon broke through the line before laying off to Dara Beckett who finished brilliantly to net with less than 10 minutes left to play. The goal put the Highschool in front and they were not caught again.
A big thank you must go the teachers of the Highschool who are putting huge work into hurling in the school and it is great to see that hard work being rewarded. The teachers involved include Martin Bourke, Nick Ryan, Shane Lawlor, Paddy O Gorman and Ciarán Barett.
This hard work by the teachers is reflected in the fact that the school have a second U17 team and they are also in a County Final to take place this week. Again there are many St Marys players involved in this team and we wish them the best of luck against Borrisokane.
